An eye opening fact is that the depletion of groundwater doubled in the 1960 to 2000 duration.
According to a recent study published in the Geophysical Research letters, most of the global groundwater is pumped out of aquifers for irrigation, household and other purposes. This is contributing to the sea-level rising and threatening the fresh water resources around the world. Throughout the world, water table depletion has risen from 126 cubic km (1960) to 283 cubic km (2000), if we have a look at this study. Particularly countries like China, northern India, Iran, Mexico and the American West are affected.
The study further points out that the reason behind all this is the easy access to pumped wells. This has lead to a surge in groundwater usage for municipal, industrial, agricultural, and many other purposes over the past 50 years of duration.
