Water Gas

The water-gas was discovered by Italian physicist Felice Fontana in 1780 .A mixture of equal amounts of hydrogen and carbon monoxide (CO) made by passing steam over red hot coke: H2O+C -> H2+CO. This mixture is a useful fuel gas. Water gas can be made in conjunction with an exothermic reaction-that between air and carbon : O2+4N2+2C -> 2Co+4N2. This mixture of CO and nitrogen is known as producer gas. It has a lower calorific value than water gas. The heating value of water gas can be improved by passing it through petroleum while hot (carburating).
