WATER POLLUTION...

Pollution Involved:-

Odor, dissolved and suspended solids, ammonia and urea, nitrate and nitrites, chloride, fluoride, carbonates, oil and grease, insecticides and pesticide resdue, tannin, heavy metals e.g lead, mercury, manganese, etc, radioactive substances.

Sources of Pollution:-

Sewage disposal, urban run-off, toxic effluents from industries, run-off over cultivated lands an nuclear power plants


water borne diseases

Water Pollution is the source for water borne diseases. The diseases commonly caused due to contaminated of water are diarrhoea, intestinal worms, hepatitis, etc. According to World Health Organization about one fourth of communicable diseases in India are water borne..

INDIRA GANDHI CANAL

INDIRA GANDHI CANAL initially known as Rajasthan Canal, is one of the largest canal systems in India. It was planned by Kanwar Sain in 1948, the canal project was launched on 31 March, 1958. The canal originate at Harika barrage in Punjab and runs parallel to Pakistan border at a distance of almost 40 km in Thar desert of Rajasthan. The total planned length of the system is 9060 km catering to the irrigation needs of a total culturable command area of 19.63 lac hectares. Out of the total command area, about 70 per cent was envisaged to be irrigated by flow system and the rest by lift system. The construction work of the canal system has been carried out through two stages. The command area of STAGE-1 lies in Ganganagar, Hanumangarh and northern part of Bikaner districts. It has gently undulating topography and its culturable command area is almost .53 lac hectares. The command area of Stage-2 is spread over Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Barmer, Jodhpur, Nagaur and Churu districts covering culturable command area of 14.10 lac ha.It comprises desert land dotted with shifting sand dunes and temperature soaring 50 degree celcius in summers. All the lift canals of Indira Gandhi Canal system is at left bank of main canal while all the canals on the right bank if flow channels.

INITIATIVE FOR DEVELOPMENT OF WATER RESOURCES

As per the Indian Constitution water supplies, irrigation and canals, water storage comes under the purview of the state governments. One of the very important roles of union government is, therefore, to ensure utmost coordination with and among state governments and resolve issue for inter-state rivers in the best possible and consensual manners.
With a view to accelerate the pace of water resources development and address the various water related issues, the Ministry of Water Resources has been implementing some important programmes and schemes which include Accelerated Irrigation Benefits Programme (AIBP), Command Area Development and water Management (CAD & WM) Programme, Flood Management Programme, Scheme For Repair, Renovation and Restoration of Water Bodies etc. A scheme related to artificial water recharge of ground water through dug wells has also been taken up.
