Industries are another major consumer of water; the products from Earth, sea, and air are extracted and later fashioned into finished products. The portion of used by industries that is varies widely, but as a whole is lower than agriculture.
It is estimated that 22% of the world’s water is used by industries.Power plants are the major industrial users, which uses water for cooling or as a power source, ore and oil refineries, which uses water in chemical processes, and manufacturing plants, which use water as a solvent.
In many industrial processes and machines water is used, such as the steam turbines and heat exchanger, it is also used as a chemical solvent. Discharge of contaminated and untreated water from Industries is water pollution. Pollution contains discharged solutes (chemical pollution) and discharged coolant water (thermal pollution). Industry requires clean and pure water for many applications and runs a variety of purification techniques in water supply.
