California Institute of Technology (CalTech) scientists have come up with a way to convert water into fuel using the sunlight and a rare earth metal oxide wich occurs naturally. These scientists were able to utilize Cerium oxide to act as a inexpensive and renewable catalyst, effectively converting water or carbon dioxide into hydrogen or carbon monoxide.
The new fuel device report explains that it makes use of the catalyst to strip oxygen out of water and convert it into a usable, liquid fuel. This is done by heating the water to over 1,600 degrees Celsius (2,900 degrees Fahrenheit), in the presence of the Cerium Oxide. Because catalyst doesn't get depleted, it can be reused hundreds of times without being damaged.
