Today, the most important and basic need of the world is fresh water.
Fresh water is easily renewable, yet the world's supply of clean, fresh water is steadily decreasing. Water demand exceeds supply in many parts of the world and if the world population continues to rise, so does the water demand will. Human activities have a larger role to play in the continuous lowering of fresh water level, everyday millions of litres of fresh water get mixed with the salty water of sea due to the melting of ice-bergs as a result of pollution.
The rate at which the freshwater is replenished is much lower than the rate at which human beings are consuming it; we can call this another major reason for the fading fresh water.
Awareness of preserving water for ecosystem has emerged recently, during 20th century, more than half the world’s wetlands have lost along with their valuable environmental services. Bio-diversified freshwater ecosystems are currently declining faster than the marine or land ecosystems.
