Water for drinking and other uses are drawn from the ground resources in most rural houses in Assam. Use of manual tubewells like the one on the photograph is most commonly used in houses. However in the urban area where the availability of ground water level reduces beyond the drawing capacity of the pumps. Electric motors and suction pumps are used to draw out water. Excessive use of these deep tube well pumps supply water but also carries certain amount of arsenic and other harmful agents not fit for human consumption.
A survey conducted by the Assam Public Health and Engineering department sponsored by UNICEF, suggests the possibility of unsafe drinking water in Assam, which has poised as a serious threat to people living in this part of the country.
The presence of high contamination of arsenic in water is a serious health threat. Various deadly diseases like skin cancer is caused by presence of arsenic in water.
Waterborne diseases are mostly due to inadequate and incompetent management of water resources.
