A Danger to Water…a Danger to Us

According to a study by a team of international scientists, most of the population of the world (about 80%) is at the risk of scarcity of water, as activity of human in the developed and developing nations threatens the world’s biodiversity and freshwater systems.

This team examined the effects on water security and biodiversity of different human influences – from hydro schemes to pollution. This study says that engineering projects, like dams and reservoirs, can be effective at protecting water supplies for people but these often cause harmful effects to the environment and do not solve the underlying causes of the scarcity of water.

This report suggests that the use of more natural options like safeguarding watersheds and floodplains can protect water supplies while preserving biological diversity.
