WATER POLLUTION...

Pollution Involved:-

Odor, dissolved and suspended solids, ammonia and urea, nitrate and nitrites, chloride, fluoride, carbonates, oil and grease, insecticides and pesticide resdue, tannin, heavy metals e.g lead, mercury, manganese, etc, radioactive substances.

Sources of Pollution:-

Sewage disposal, urban run-off, toxic effluents from industries, run-off over cultivated lands an nuclear power plants

water borne diseases

Water Pollution is the source for water borne diseases. The diseases commonly caused due to contaminated of water are diarrhoea, intestinal worms, hepatitis, etc. According to World Health Organization about one fourth of communicable diseases in India are water borne..

WATER POLLUTION...

Indiscriminate use of water by increasing population and industrial expansion has led degradation of the quality of water considerably. Surface water available from rivers canals, lakes, etc. is never pure. It contains small quantities of suspended particles, organic and inorganic substances. When concentration of these substances increases, the water becomes polluted, and hence becomes unfit for use. In such a situation, the self-purifying capacity of water is unable to purify water.

Though water pollutants are also created by natural sources - erosion, landslides, decay and decomposition of plants and animals, etc. pollutants from human sources are the real causes of concern. Human beings pollute the water through industrial, agricultural and cultural activities. Amongst these activities, industry is the most significant contributor.
Industries produce several undesirable products including industrial wastes, polluted waste water, poisonous gases, chemical residuals, numerous heavy metals, dust, smoke, etc.
Most of industrial wastes are disposed off in running water or lakes. Eventually, poisonous elements reach the reservoirs, rivers and other water bodies, which destroy the bio-system of these waters. Major water polluting industries are leather, pulp and paper, etc.

INDIRA GANDHI CANAL

INDIRA GANDHI CANAL initially known as Rajasthan Canal, is one of the largest canal systems in India. It was planned by Kanwar Sain in 1948, the canal project was launched on 31 March, 1958. The canal originate at Harika barrage in Punjab and runs parallel to Pakistan border at a distance of almost 40 km in Thar desert of Rajasthan. The total planned length of the system is 9060 km catering to the irrigation needs of a total culturable command area of 19.63 lac hectares. Out of the total command area, about 70 per cent was envisaged to be irrigated by flow system and the rest by lift system. The construction work of the canal system has been carried out through two stages. The command area of STAGE-1 lies in Ganganagar, Hanumangarh and northern part of Bikaner districts. It has gently undulating topography and its culturable command area is almost .53 lac hectares. The command area of Stage-2 is spread over Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Barmer, Jodhpur, Nagaur and Churu districts covering culturable command area of 14.10 lac ha.It comprises desert land dotted with shifting sand dunes and temperature soaring 50 degree celcius in summers. All the lift canals of Indira Gandhi Canal system is at left bank of main canal while all the canals on the right bank if flow channels.
